Sony has signed a partnership agreement with BSkyB (operator of Sky TV Pay service) and production company Telegenic to develop the world’s first outside mobile broadcast unit capable of capturing live content, such as Premier League football matches, in 3D. This announcement comes after 18 months of tests undertaken by the three companies.
The first sign of this agreement will be the broadcast in 3D of the Arsenal-Manchester United football match in 9 pubs this weekend.
By April a new channel, Sky 3D, will be available as part of the Sky satellite subscription and taken up by an addition hundred pubs. The channel will be offered to individual subscribers later in the year.
Pubs and households will need though to be equipped with Sky+HD decoders and 3D-Ready TV sets. Viewers will also need special glasses.
In the USA, Sony is also developing a similar system in collaboration with All Mobile Video.
