South Korea: Multi-function Digital Terminals Installed in Seoul Underground

9 March 2010 11 h 13 min

FingerTouch_DigitalView Since last month, a set of new digital terminals have been installed in the corridors of the Seoul underground system.

The units, known as ‘Digital View’ and manufactured by the Korean company Fingertouch, feature two touch screens:

- the large screen on the right serves as an orientation guide, indicating the various places of interest near to the station on a map. There is also a way-finder function: the user enters his destination and is shown a 360°plan of the path to take (enabling him to take a virtual walk through the streets).

- the screen on the left displays a variety of general information (news headlines, stock-market, weather etc…) and also has an integrated telephone service from which calls can be made to anywhere in Korea.

The system also sells virtual goods and gives out electronic discount vouchers which can be used in nearby shops.

To date, more than 900 units have been installed in nearly a hundred stations in the Seoul underground network.
