France & Switzerland: CITYPAL Parking Meters – New Access Points for Digital Services ?

12 July 2011 17 h 15 min1 Comment

Parkeon_Visuel Citypal 2_deParkeon has just launched CITYPAL, a new connected parking meter solution which supports urban digital services.

The meter, which can work completely autonomously with solar energy, features, amongst others, a seven-inch colour touch-screen. This can be used by local authorities to display a variety of content and applications: up-to-date information for users of the parking place, local news of the community, practical information, way-finding services, real-time interactive services concerning transport (traffic conditions, bicycle rental availabilities, public transport information for passengers) etc..

The terminal could also be used for paying for a variety of services (topping up transport cards, telephone cards etc.) or for paying fines. The solution already enables payment for parking via an NFC mobile phone. Links between the meter and mobile phones are already in place: it is possible to start a transaction on CITYPAL (buying initial parking time) and to continue on a mobile phone (time extension).

The content management software was developed internally and is based on Linux. It has been designed as an ‘application container’ that can integrate a library of services developed by Parkeon or by third parties. Each service has a business model unique to its requirements and to the partners involved.

Twenty test units have already been installed – in Geneva (3 terminals) and Cannes (17 terminals).
