Chukuta Gamer: first La Paz tournament that recognizes video games as a sport

The Chukuta Gamer, organized by the Mayor’s Office of La Paz, took place between the months of July and August of this year and brought together 2,700 contestants among children, youth and adults. The tournament took place at the Monumental Club Gaming House “La República” and Mayor Iván Arias was present with the competitors before and throughout the competition.

The contest had more than seven thousand dollars in prizes and the support of private sponsors and, according to Arias, a new version is planned every year. The Burgomaster admitted that abroad this kind of virtual duels have live broadcasts, commentators and an expectant public such as a conventional sport, therefore, he provided a radio space in the program “La Paz en paz”, where it was in evidence the preparation that the players must have before each tournament.

“The development of these athletes is not only at the video game level. To be e-sports athletes, you must practice, take care of your studies, your hours of rest, diet and have physical activity ”, explained Sarai Hurtado, one of the people in charge of the Monumental Club Gaming House, to Mayor Arias.

Gustavo Edson Ibáñez, another of the owners of “La República”, urged that the parents of gamers “not be closed and do not restrict” this electronic sport to their children. He highlighted support as a fundamental tool and stressed that players, by acting under pressure, can develop better job response skills.

In an interview for the BBC, athlete Usain Bolt commented on the importance of video games in shaping his character and competitive spirit. “When you get on the court, you have the same mentality as when you are playing video games. You just want to win, “he said.

Players from all over Bolivia and other countries such as Argentina, Russia and Peru participated in this first Chukuta Gamer tournament, who competed in FIFA 2021, Tekken 7, Fortnite and Dota 2 games.
